Kenny Schmidt's Regal

Post by Reb Stew on November 15th 2015, 8:05 am

Scroungers Car Club Members and close friends read all the way through please. A few months back Kenny Schmidt passed away at the young age of 32. Kenny's family was like my own. When a rough, mean teenager was out on his own and could not find a job Kenny's dad put me to work. I sit around the dinner table when Kenny was around 5 or 6 many a night eating and talking like I was family. I watched him grow up. He had some issues and couldn't work a normal job so I did what I felt his dad did for me. I put him to work. First at the garage and then working with me when I owned the repossession company. He told me time after time how when he was a boy he would sit on the porch and just look at my Firebird and his brother 68 Mustang, both jacked up in the rear with huge tires sticking out, the front end on the ground with the engine showing. He told me he thought that was the coolest thing ever. Everyone hanging out cruising down the street with Kiss or Rolling stones jamming though the speakers. It was the late 80's. He thought we were Gods, his words lol... I treated Kenny like a little brother. I watched out for him. If he got out of hand I corrected him. Sometime he would get mad at me when I would jump on him for doing something stupid. Like stopping at a guys house only to throw a rock through the guys glass door. Kenny was something else. It made me sad the last few years of his life when he got upset at me. His mind was all messed up thinking crazy stuff. I talked to him about it 6 months before he passed. Seemed like everything was fine but Kenny shut almost everyone out. Only a handful of people were to be part of the last days. It was a shock to everyone when he passed. I guess with dad being sick and then passing on it left me reflecting on what a man leaves here on this earth. My dad was a lucky man to leave a mark as he did. I wondered when it's my time what will I leave? I have great kids. I try to do the right things but is that enough? Sadly Kenny left nothing other than memories. He had no wealth. He had no children. Other than a house and a car he had nothing to show for his lifetime other than what we have in our hearts and minds. To make it worse he was in debt. To settle his estate his car and house had to be sold in order to pay the bills. Strangers will have what little he had. Looking at the car for sale on Craigslist had me thinking about what he said about our cars in the 80's. slammed front end, huge tires in the back and the engine showing. Looks like he followed right in those footsteps with this Regal. He loved that car. SO... I just couldn't stand the thought of someone getting the car and wrecking it, stripping it or just beating the eyeballs out of it then junking it. So today I bought it. Another kicker is that with all that has went on and Kenny being an old member of the car club I'm donating it to the Scroungers Car Club. The club can do as they wish with it as long as it never leaves the club. We can race it, fix it and make it into somewhat of a show car or whatever. All I ask is for is for the first year leave it pretty much like it is. We can cruise it, race it or whatever then following year we can maybe paint it or something.

Glad the car isn't getting trashed. I know it was in limbo for a little while.
