Flying Oldsmobiles

Post by Cratethis on September 1st 2013, 5:38 am

Car Life Magazine Covered ain interesting development at Oldsmobile back in February of 1964. For reasons unknown, Oldsmobile decided to convert a their newly introduced 330 V8 to aircraft use. Understand, this is not just simply bolting a V8 powerplant into the place occupied by an aircraft engine - there are many modifications that must be done, and in some instances, it might not even work.

You have reducing the prop speed versus engine rpm, oiling and cooling and a host of tiny but significant changes necessary to make the 330 V8 "Flight worthy". What was interesting is that the 330 produced equal HP to the 471 cu. in. Lycoming air-cooled engine it replaced!

But what may be most significant is that it only took 5 weeks from the start of the project to the Cessna being airborne - as you see above. Best, the whole configuration received FAA certification, meaning, it could have been produced!

That is cool, neat history.

I tried to make my 72 Cutlass fly, was doing 130 mph over the big bridges on 71 N right above Lebanon. Had I blown a tire, I would've been flying into the river....young and dumb!
