Just waiting for the tank to arrive

Post by junkyardjeff on August 31st 2013, 2:20 am

Ever since I got my 65 custom 500 more door it gassy smell so last fall the tank decided to actually start leaking where it could be seen so it sat all summer, two weeks ago I pulled the tank to see how bad it was and looked bad enough that I think the radiator shop wont touch it so I have one coming from California. Just waiting for it to arrive.

And add to that a leaking radiator in the 55 that will have to get fixed,it has a soldered tank seal leaking and had a shop fix the same leak twice so ts going to another shop for the third time. I had the same shop repair the radiator in the 37 when the water pump broke and went into the radiator and I smell coolant but its a big pain to remove so it will have to start leaking more before I tackle that project.

Now a days it's cheaper in most cases to just buy a repop of each. The old shops are charging an arm and a leg.

I had the same problem in IL with a rad. shop. B&B There out of business go figure! 3 times each time it was about 80 bucks! that was money I should have spent on a new one.Rolling Eyes That is what I ended up doing anyway.

When I do take one in it is to a little 3 man shop in Nashville. I went there with my dad as a kid. Now the shop owners kid runs the place and the old man works in the shop still. You would think after eighty years or so of smoking and breathing those fumes he would have to be hooked up to a lung machine. He's there every day though.

The radiator in the 55 is a recent build but the one shop was probably too lazy to take the tank off and clean it up and most likely just heated up the solder, the gas tank is supposed to be a nice one from California. I was wanting to put the new tailgate on the bronco but its in front of the 55 so not getting much done this week.

Ordered new tank today and I thought the sending unit did not work in the used tank but since its now a 25 gallon tank a couple gallons would not move the needle much, put about 4 gallons in it and its at a 1/4 tank and since its not leaking too bad I will drive it until the new tank arrives. Since its a clean tank I will throw it in the shed in case I find a cheap 2 door that will probably need a tank and fix it then.
