Useless information non automotive.

Post by dieseldr on May 2nd 2013, 2:59 am

I've lived where I have lived all my life. Grew up in western NY, still here (for what reason I'll never know, but someplace has to be home). Through the good fortune of meeting my wife, (since that's where she is from) and because of what I do, I spend a fair amount of time in NW Pennsylvania. Anyhow, the other day I was cutting cross lots through some old, seemingly abandoned PA state highways, ( a lot of them seem abandoned if you had to drive on them) to get to another repair site, when I passed a sign that caught my eye. Something on it about a triple divide. So I backed up a couple hundred feet to get a closer look at it, and learned that in the field to my right you could walk in a 200 foot circle around the crest of the knob, and if you spit in one area, it would flow to the Genesee river north to the great lakes... move around the hilltop a bit, and if you spit it would flow to the Chesapeake bay and the Atlantic Ocean...... move around a bit more and if you spit there it would flow to the Allegany river which flows to Pittsburgh, joins the Monongahela and becomes the Ohio, and flows to the Mississippi and to the Gulf. Strange that this sign is where it is marking this location, with no other indicators around the area to direct tourists to it. On the way there, you pass the headwaters of the Allegany and the Genesee, and you can step over the beginning of both rivers without so much as even a running start to do it. Just a bit of useless information that I find interesting, and probably nobody ever gives a second thought to. That's all.

Don't think I ever heard of place like that. It was always a landmark when we crossed the Continental Divide going West. That's when you knew you were really IN the West.

I thought I was the only deep thinker. It shows you what path your life may have taken with just a small twist of fate. Walk one way and things may have been different. Maybe for the better maybe for the worse. Thing is if you are happy you spit in the right direction when you were younger.

The neat thing is that this particular area is lousy with what you might call Mayberry RFD syndrome.... simple people, working at the plant, or farming, most of the roads are dirt, and, the best part- NO CELL SERVICE! What a wonderful place!
