Jesse James Model A

Post by Reb Stew on November 13th 2012, 5:17 am

I don't normally do this. I have to brag. I don't want to come off the wrong way but it takes a lot to really blow me away. I feel there are a few builders that are top notch but it's 99% been done or done wrong. Jesse is a hell of a bike builder and I won't take that away from him but when it cames to cars I figured he was just another??? I won't even go there. Anyway! Tonight I was watching his TV show. Jesse James Hot Rod Garage. They were working on a late 31 Model A for Paul Teutul. It's not everyones style but I always leaned toward that east coast, show car style. He knocked it out of the park. The Model A is sick! Clean, traditional styled and just bad (BEEP)! It takes a lot to impress me and that car did it. I'd love to see more builders get back to this style.

I had the pleasure of talking with Chris Jacobs of Overhauling a few years ago, and I passed my idea along to him, I am sure it will NEVER be done, as it would be real hard

Over the big old USofA, there are 100's of custom builders, as good as, or BETTER than most we see....Have Chip Foose seek them out, and do a build with them...that way, draw intrest to the show from all regions of the country, as I am tired of seeing all West coast anything done all the time...show me dude in Muncie, or Hunington or Ashland...or Cooks in Florence.....

If they just wouldn't inject all the drama!
So many say JJ is a jerk, can all those people be wrong? I think not! Very talented though!
As far as the coupe, I really liked it to Reb, but needs some stripping or something to break up all the white! Also not a fan of being so low in the rear with the tires that tall! I know Iknow, probably showing my age there! Very Happy

Bob Bleed was building that style before Jesse asked him to come work at Austin Speed Shop. So, maybe his input should be considered in the final product.

In the end, it's still just a TV show.

Bob was building that style but not on that scale. Most of Bob's stuff looked to be on the jalopy side. Not really busted beaters but a little aged, which is really cool. I'm sure his input was put in ALOT. As for Jesse, I'm not speaking of the man but the car that was built. That style is east coast style, late 40's early 50's. All the old racers were mellowing out and slowing down so they took their hot rods on the show circuit. Redone with glossy paint, lots and lots of chrome. Very low bodies. That channeled way down look you really never seen on the west coast. All in all I just think the Model A is really clean, simple and wicked. It's refreshing to see someone build something that is really nice without going over the top with do dads and letting the age(patina) of the car show.

One thing I was wondering about. I thought when they started the frame had speed holes in it. After it was done it looked like there wasn't. I'm not sure if I just seen something wrong or what.
I like the speed holes in the frames.

I'm a fan of white paint too. It just always looked clean to me. When I painted the Fire Chicken white I kept hearing it must be full of Bondo. ??? It had (0) Bondo in it. The car came out of TX and was rust free. I just liked white.

You're right Bob's stuff at the time wasn't of the caliber of this car. Then again I'm sure he wasn't working with the budget they are working with now. Ever see the frames he was making when he still lived in Delafield? Art I tell ya.

Jesse James is no fool. He went and got the best he could find to work at Austin Speed Shop. I'm sure before and after the cameras are rolling he had a conversation with Bob along the lines of, don't take anything I say on camera personal. Maybe even a phone call the night before saying here's whats going to happen but don't tell the other guys so their reactions are genuine.
