What a day

Post by junkyardjeff on May 13th 2012, 12:18 am

Today I am so mad at myself for what I had done I had to shut down the garage and quit for the day, drove over a hundred miles a couple months ago to get what was supposed to be a correct step bumper for my 66 and after getting it blasted and painted found out its not off a 65 like I was told but is for a 73 to 79. After getting it blasted I wondered if I had had the wrong bumper blasted since the new one did not look too great now that all the rust was off of it and knew I should of done some measuring before sending it to the blaster so I am back to not having a bumper that fits since I scrapped the other bumper I had last week. The bumper I scrapped just had a corner that was bent and could have lived with it so next weekend I will head to Starks and get the regular rear bumper off the truck the front came off of and just put a receiver style hitch on it,I did get the front bumper painted and installed today and all four rims painted too so it was not a total loss.

After I cooled down I went back in the garage to see if I can make it work but dont have any material to make new brackets and anything to make spacers,I am going to call Kaffenbargers truck equipment monday to see if I can buy a new step bumper. If I can get one I doubt it will be as heavy as the originals and if thats the case it will be a regular bumper and a Reese hitch.

Lesson learned is do not throw out anything until the project is done,I do have enough paint left to paint the new bumper but over a hundred dollars was just thrown out the window on this bumper.

I was hoping the local truck equipment shop could get me a new one but no,the frame is the same width as the 73 to 87 Chevys so I might be able to make one work but the aftermarket step bumpers are made of so much thinner metal then the originals. Probably still going with a regular bumper and a Reese hitch.

Before I would buy one I would have to finish the truck and drive it to where the bumper is,I am concerned that the ends of the bumper might not clear the bed but that one might work since it does not wrap around the corner of the bed.

I will look into it after I get back from Starks saturday, that bumper would look funny on a lowered shortbed.

Jeff I would guess that 68 is like the one you had blasted?????

If it's not would this one work? It's coming off. I'm going to look for a non step for this one.

That's what I want! I ordered a LMC mag last night. Thanks for the info John. that's what I'm looking for.

Jeff... I just talked to the guy that owned the truck years ago. It's funny I posted this and then an hour later he tells me he put that bumper on my 68 when he had it. It came off his 65 Camper Special.

John Howard how is your door trim on your spears. I have an extra set of doors with the trim. I'm not going to run the trim.

It seems like there are plenty of the regular bumpers in the junkyards up here and I would be interested in the bumper,I recently picked up a wrap around step bumper for the 66 but would like that one to keep in stock in case I picked up another truck. The 66 presently has one from a 73 to 87 GM truck on it so if anyone needs one for a GM truck this one will be available when I get around to working on the wrap around bumper.
