Old Gas Stations, Hotels and Car Hop Pics

Post by RebStew on November 10th 2007, 10:58 pm

As some of you know I'm nuts over old buildings. the stuff they build today has no style or usefull style. I alway want to travel to find old gas stations, choke and pukes or what have you. it took me years to understand that I don't have to leave my area to see this stuff. it's funny how people overlook things right in their own back yard. I still want to get out and see other stuff in different state but I figured I'd post a few I have local and will get some more pics through the week of stuff I have here around town.
this place use to have a lift outside that cars would sit on time to time when I first started driving. never remember the gas pumps out there though. they were gone by then.

this one is still a working garage. it's just a few blocks from my house. I love the lubrication garage that sits to the side. it still has the old lights that sit over the gas pumps but the pumps are long gone.

not a good pic of this place but it has two bays on the side and is still a working garage. the pumps are long gone but you can see from the way the building is that you drove through the corner of the lot to get gas.

here an old gas station. the pumps are long gone and they use it for a used car lot from time to time. I would love to have this place and build an old garage next to it. it still has the old post for the sign hanging too. in Newport if you take those signs down you can never put them back up. they are grandfathered in as they sit but if you take it down it's a done deal. you see a lot of place here with empty hanging signs. I always figured they knew if they took it off they wouldn't be able to use it later

I'm guessing this building is 150 years old or older. It wasn't redone as a gas station at one time and by looking at it now you could never tell it was one. When I was a kid I use to play down by this old building. the front was all paved and the island where the gas pump use to be was still there. the right side of that inset was a big rap around window and on the other was a garage door. around the side of the building was another garage door. the entire first floor was a bay to work. it has came a long way in a short time.

here is what's left of Neltners Service Station. I can remember rolling down the hill out of gas more than once in someones fastback 'Stang. Laughing Just making enough speed down hill to roll to get to the pumps. I was a teenager then sunny

this is a strange place. it's been open for as long as I can remember but no one with any common sence goes there. the guy that owns it is a nut case and you have to be a felon to work there I think. no one but goofballs and criminals have their cars work on there. the gas pumps are long gone and they use it for a???garage. he is always working on something but like I said no one in their right mind lets them wrench on their car. I have heard so many stories about the owner I couldn't recall them all. more people than I can recall have seen him take a roll of hundred dollar bills out of his pocket and roll one up, light it and then use the $100.00 to light his cigars. you can't jew him down on anything. it upsets him. if you need a winshield for a 68 Camaro and one is sitting there, you ask how much? he may say $75.00. you pull your money out, you only have $70.00. will you take $70.00 for it? YEAP!! walks over to the door grabs a bat and smashes the windshield. YEAP! now I'll take $70.00! this has happen with all kind of glass perfect body parts ect ect. he held his brother down and shot his own brother in the hand for stealing $20.00 . Mark Mittin is a guy that use to do repo work for me. Mark and one of this wrenchers had a falling out and the guy tried to beat Mark up. Mark took a swing, knocked the guy on the ground, jumped on top of him and started swinging. he heard a cricket and then something cold on his neck. it was the hammer sound and an end of the owners pistol on him. he let Mark go with a warning that next time he wouldn't even know what happened. so all in all this guy is a nut. if anyone wants to let him work on their ride he's across the street from Bobby Mackeys haunted country music bar. but that another story. this may sound a little crazy but everyone that lives around here knows this guy and can vouch for what I'm saying.

yeah , I seen that. the building behind the teddy bear sign is Riverside Ford Dealership. it was huge and ended up taking a block. they ended up moving out to the county and then I think the owner sold it. he got into road racing and opened up a pretty nice speed shop at the top of Newport. it has a dyno and all kinds of stuff in there. I hear they can and will do anything on your hopped up car

this gas station is on the way to Jim Leis house. it's on a side road off Rt. 32 about and hour away from here. on the right side of the pic you can see the pump island and the light overhead.

I talked to this guy a few times. this place has been handed down through the years from father to the son. the guy that has it now says there use to be old gas pumps sitting in the front. the sign post is still there and he even showed me the old drive up lift they used when doing a lube job.

here the old drive on lift.

he has a few old cars laying around. he said he would take a 1K for this chevy. it's sub framed (F~Body). first time I talked to him he told me $500. then the next time it was $800. then today it was $1000. lol you better hurry if you want it. it may be $9K before it ends

whats left of a Dodge truck

Here's a cool one. I was coming back from Louisville about 9 AM this morning when I spotted this old station on Main Street ( US 60 ) in Shelbyville,Ky. I hate driving interstates and when I'm not in a hurry, I'll try my best to take an old road, just to find such treasures. The fact that I could drive U.S. Highway 60 almost all the way home was a bonus for me. In case you all don't know, I've got a fasination with that road.

Anyway I saw this classic on a street corner there in Shelbyville and automaticly turned around and went back to take pictures.

Hey Steve, how do you feel about adding in some old style motels to this thread?

A couple guys here have already been subjected to my rant about destroying history in the name of progress. Here's one such case.

Jerry's restaurant in Morehead,Ky ( on US 60 by the way )

Back in the Day - 1960s

Today - it's a parking lot for the University.

Again on US 60 but this time in Ashland KY.

The Bluegrass , which was a cruising spot for many years

In 2003

A couple weeks ago

While I was in Shelbyville I saw this grand old sign.

Sadly it advertises an empty lot.

But here's what it looked like in the past

and yes, it was on US 60 as well.

I'll come back later with some more if you all would be interested.

OK , how about something with a better ending?

Camp 60 - Olive Hill, KY

Guess where this gem is located. It's on Old US 60 actually. The road was redirected in the 60s , to make it wider and straighter.

Here's what it looked like in the 40's

As the name implies, it was a Roadside camp, you can see the cabins behind the main station/restaurant.
My dad ran the place for awhile in the 50s and I bought the first postcard for him after I found it on Ebay. Unfortunately, he was in a coma when it came and passed away the next day. This building is what got me really fired up into researching the history of U.S. Highway 60. Oh yeah, it was Pure Oil station.

Now here's the good part. The building is now being used for a residence and is well taken care of. The cabins are there but are in need of repair.
