So... there are times where you start one thing. And that leads to another, and to another. You then begin to think... maybe I should have just slapped it together and not gone this far. Well... this is one of those times where I'm glad I went the extra few steps.

I had been debating on leaving my motor how it was (as a long block), clean up as much as I could, and leave it at that.

Then I thought, well I bought a full gasket kit, it won't take much to at least go ahead and look at the top of the pistons and put new head gaskets on now.

Then I thought, well I guess I should go ahead and have the block honed and put in new rings.

So tonight I spent the time pulling the harmonic balancer, the crank, and the pistons. The last things in the block before I take it to the machine shop.

Well...I was organizing everything...and low and behold what did I come across???? a bent rod on piston #3.

So....... the long and the short of it. I'm glad that I took the block completely down. Because I would have been so excited to get the motor finally in the DeSoto, here in a few months, to only have to have pulled it right back out.

So it's been a while since I've had a real update on this ride. Here are a few pics to show it off and to bring you up to date.

1953 DeSoto Firedome.

It originally had the "baby" Hemi. It had been removed before I bought it.

Olds 455bb

Old timing chain...

New double roller...

All cleaned up and ready for placement...

Just for fun...

So with that being said... I'm going to need to schedule a work session to get help to put this motor in the DeSoto and make motor mounts for it.

I will have to look at my calendar and see when I have a free Saturday coming up. Will setup a work session when I have some dates.

Had some time tonight tonight. So I painted the motor. I know that the Olds BB wasn't ever gold, but I love the fact that Olds used gold on their motors at all. So I decided I'd paint mine that color.

Here are the pics from the work session and figuring out if the motor was even going to fit. Oh... and it did, better than anyone thought it was when we were looking at it on the ground.

Re: Desoto

Post by Cratethis on July 12th 2010, 11:12 pm

So, per Steve and Butch's help and direction, there was a list of things for me to accomplish before the next work session to actually make the motor mounts and drop this motor in for good.

(Accomplished)
Take out the heater box
Take out the fan
Take out any old linkage to the old trans
Flatten out the 1inch flange that was on the fire wall running through the trans tunnel

(Remaining to be done)
Get the two steel plates for the motor mounts
Some small angle iron pieces
Remove mechanical fuel pump and make block off plate
Have the studs that are frozen into the exhaust manifolds removed

So here is what I have accomplished so far:

Had some aluminum flashing sitting around and some of that Home Depot "dyna mat" so I made some panels to cover the holes for now. Nothing fancy but they work.

I'm ready to drop the motor in. It looks like the next couple weekends are consumed with different events. I know it's Labor Day weekend, but how does Saturday the 4th look for everyone?

Steve... I know we talked about possibly needing two sessions. One to put the motor in to make the patterns for the motor mounts and then another to actually install the motor.
Think on this as to how we can do it all in one session. It has been so long since the last session, I fear that by the time we get around to a 3rd one that I won't be till next spring. I'd really like to get the motor in this fall.

Re: Desoto

Also, I could really use everyone's eyes on my car. I had someone walk by and ask if that old car was mine out back. I told them yes and the lady proceeded to ask me if there was anything wrong with the car because she knows someone who really wants to buy it. I know the DeSoto wouldn't be easy to hide as it would stick out, but that wouldn't stop some people around here.

After having someone break into my house last year I am much more cautious. Having some random woman asking about my car puts me on alert.

So can if anyone can spare a glance every once in a while, while passing by, that would be much appreciated!

Getting some work done. I took the manifolds off and took a little metal off around the outside bolt holes. They were just barley hitting the frame. With the metal gone it fits between perfect now.

I also got the transmission under the car and bolted up to the motor.

Pics to come.
